Final Rest for Lyle R. Flagg: Visitation and Funeral Services Set

Visitation and funeral arrangements have been arranged for Lyle R. Flagg, 85, who was principal at five schools, including Armwood, Brandon an East Bay, and chair of both the Brandon and Riverview chambers of commerce.

  Family and friends will gather tonight, May 24, for a visitation at Southern Funeral Care in Riverview for Lyle R. Flagg, who in his 85 years of life helped shape a town, one student and business at a time. Flagg's death has caused a flood of memories among citizens of the Greater Brandon and Riverview areas, who remember a man who served as chairman of both the Greater Brandon and Riverview area chambers of commerces and principal of five schools, including Armwood, Brandon and East Bay. "When I think of the giants in our community, Lyle Flagg was an icon," said Earl Lennard, who served as both Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections and Hillsborough County superintendent of schools. Brandon Wrestlers Named InterMat High School All-Americans

Two Brandon wrestlers add to their list of accomplishments.

  Two Brandon High School wrestlers have been named 2012-13 InterMat High School All-Americans. Duly noted were seniors Kevin Norstrem and Travis Berridge, at 138 pounds and 170 pounds, respectively. The list was published April 24 at InterMatwrestle.com. At The Lakeland Center on Feb. 16, Kevin Norstrem ended his high school wrestling career with a fifth individual state title, a moment that he memorialized in the arms of legendary head coach Russ Cozart, whose hug was witnessed by the crowd that had risen to give the 138-pound wrestler a standing ovation, according to a TBO. com report.   Recognized for being an 8-gallon blood donor, Riverview High School principal Robert Heilmann received high praise from Mike Pratt of OneBlood Inc., who on April 4 heralded the school's 2013 receipt of the national School Blood Drive Award. "He just exudes leadership," Pratt said. "He's instilling a sense of community responsibility in these young people."   The Spoto High School community learned Cassandra Mattison was named Hillsborough County Teacher of the Year at a March 28 banquet hosted by the Hillsborough Education Foundation. In accepting the award, Mattison "thanked the teachers at every school she has attended in Hillsborough County, starting with Shaw Elementary and ending with King High School," according to a Tampa Bay Times report on the event. "I would not be standing where I am today if it were not for teachers like you," she reportedly told the audience of more than 2,000 educators. Jeremy Rosado's Single Release Set for April 2

It's been an eventful year since Jeremy Rosado was voted off "American Idol" as a Top 13 finisher. He's set to release his first single, "Don't Be Afraid," on iTunes and Amazon, and then his CD, April 6, at the Nativity Catholic Church Youth Center.

    Jeremy Rosado of Valrico, a Top 13 finisher in the 2012 American Idol season, has a big week in store, starting with the online release of his single followed by a Brandon debut of his CD. The single, "Don't Be Afraid," featuring Pablo Villatoro, formerly of Group 1 Crew, is scheduled to be released online, at iTunes and Amazon and more, on April 2. The original release date had been given as March 26. "Sorry guys, but [some things] you just can't control," Rosado said on his Facebook page. But, he added, "God is great through it all" as he asks his fans to "tell everyone" about the upcoming release. Rosado gave a preview of what's to come at the final round of the 2013 Riverview Idol contest, held March 19 at Riverview High School. Deputy Douglas Duvall, a five-year veteran of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, spoke March 1 at 240 Faithway Drive in Seffner. He is credited with saving the life of Jeremy Bush, who made a desperate attempt to save his brother, Jeffrey.

  The only thing Deputy Douglas Duvall knew when he arrived at 240 Faithway Drive in Seffner on Feb. 28 is what he had heard from his dispatcher, that "somebody was trapped under a house." "The family was outside, everybody was upset," said Duvall, a five-year veteran of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, at an early evening press conference March 1 near the sinkhole-plagued home in Seffner. "I entered the house, really didn't know what was going on," he added. "I went into the hallway, and when I turnd into the bedroom, the only thing that I saw was a hole." 2013 Riverview Idol: Top 10 Contestants Advance

The Riverview Idol contest at Riverview High School returns for a second round Tuesday, March 5. See who advanced to the Top 10 round of competition.

  Ten singers have advanced to the second round of 2013 Riverview Idol competition after performing with 15 of their peers at Riverview High School on Tuesday, Feb. 26. In all, about 45 students had auditioned to compete for a Top 25 spot. Jeremy Rosado of Valrico, cheered on by the Greater Brandon community in his 2012 run for the American Idol crown, is set to judge the final round of the Riverview Idol contest, March 19. 2013 Bay Area Renaissance Festival: Brandon Teen Set To Perform

Jessica Jacobs of Brandon, a student at the magnet school arts program at Blake High School in Tampa, is set to dance around the maypole at the 2013 Bay Area Renaissance Festival at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI).

  Brandon teenager Jessica Jacobs, a junior at the magnet school theater arts program at Blake High School, said she has a weekend gig that harkens back to the 16th century, and life as it was "when Catharine Parr was King Henry's sixth wife." "I am a peasant dancer, I dance at the maypole," Jacobs said in a telephone interview Feb. 21. "I'm a Mary, that's what we call them." Roberts is part of the Bay Area Renaissance Festival, back at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) for a 35th year. The festival is open weekends Feb. 23 to April 7. Betty Jo Tompkins Receives Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award

"Long overdue" was the sentiment expressed by past recipients of the Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award, who heralded this year's selection of honoree Betty Jo Tompkins. The award is given annually by the Community Roundtable.

  Noticeably missing at the Community Affairs Dinner hosted by the Community Roundtable at the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association on Feb. 20 was longtime community advocate and volunteer Betty Jo Tompkins, who never misses the annual event. This year, because she is recuperating from a medical condition, Tompkins had to sit out. But she wasn't out of mind. Hardly. Tompkins at the dinner was named the newest recipient of the Alice B. Tompkins Community Service Award. "Hallelujah, she's a great gal," said Dick Stowers, who received the award in 1976, the second year it was given.
