Hillsborough County Cold-Weather Shelters Open Dec. 28; Volunteer Says Serving Is His 'Passion'

Winter is eight days old and the Brandon Recreation Center on Sadie Street has already been called to open as a cold-weather shelter 11 times this month.

Volunteers will be ready to go again on this eighth day of winter as shelters open for an 11th time in December thanks to the freeze and hard-freeze warnings issued for the Tampa Bay area and surrounding counties. In the Greater Brandon area that means overnight hours Dec. 28 for the Brandon Community Center on Sadie Street. There, the homeless and people living in homes without adequate heat can find shelter from the cold. Ryan Harrington has his reasons for helping to coordinate check-in and activities at the center.
