Kiwanis Speaker Promotes YMCA's Cancer Survivor Program

Steve Morrow of Brandon spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon about his battle with cancer, and the strength and friendship he found at the Cancer Survivor Program at the Campo Family YMCA.

  Steve Morrow is a big, strong guy who battles a formidable foe — cancer. At a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon, he talked about his cancer fight, and the strength he found at the Campo Family YMCA in Valrico. "I like to say, 'I lost my leg but I won the war," said Morrow, a two-time cancer survivor. "It's a tough road, but luckily I have my wife, my family, behind me." So, too, the Cancer Survivor Program at the Campo Family YMCA on Culbreath Road in Valrico, where Morrow has been an active participant. YMCA's Offer Healthier Snacks With New Vending Machines

The Brandon Family YMCA, along with others YMCA's in the Tampa Bay area, are offering healthier snacks with newly installed vending machines from HUMAN, which stands for, "Helping Unite Mankind and Nutrition."

Greater Brandon area YMCA members, including at the Brandon Family YMCA on Kingsway Road, now have more nutritious options when it comes to refreshments. Vending machines at Tampa-area YMCA locations were recently replaced with HUMAN (Helping Unite Mankind and Nutrition) vending machines that are said to offer the healthiest options when it comes to snacks and beverges. The white- and green-machines help promote a “5-2-1-almost none philosophy,” according to Kathy Rabon, vice president of development and communications for the Tampa-area YMCA organization. The philosophy calls for children and families to, each day, eat five servings of fruits or vegetables, spend less than two hours of time in front of the TV, get one hour of exercise and…

FANG's Back-To-School Festival at the Campo Y (PHOTOS)

The 10th annual Back-To-School Festival at the Campo Family YMCA in the Greater Brandon community of Valrico drew a strong crowd for vendors treats and showcases. The event is sponsored by FANG, the FishHawk Area Networking Group.

  Supporting children from low-income families with school supplies and backpacks was the mission behind the grand networking event held Aug. 5 at the Campo Family YMCA in the Greater Brandon community of Valrico. There, the FishHawk Area Networking Group, or FANG, hosted its 10th Annual Back-To-School Festival, featuring a strong crowd of attendees visiting with vendor booths and watching dance and judo peformances. This gallery of photos gives testament to the day's events. Backpacks and school supplies will be distributed to registered families at the YMCA's Camp Christina on Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in an event sponsored by both the Y and the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) of Brandon.

FANG Back -To-School Bash At Campo Family YMCA Today (Aug. 5)

The 10th Annual FishHawk Area Networking Group (FANG) Back-To-School Festival runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 5 at the Campo Family YMCA on Culbreath Road in the Greater Brandon community of Valrico.

  The 10th Annual FishHawk Area Networking Group (FANG) Back-to-School Festival runs today, Aug. 5, at the Campo Family YMCA gymnasium, featuring more than 100 local business booths, demonstrations, giveaways, doors prizes and samplings from 10 area restaurants. The grand event for the Greater Brandon area opens at 1 p.m. and runs for three hours. The event is held each year to collect back-to-school supplies for children from migrant families. "We know that each year, the heat becomes a factor for our vendors and attendees," said FANG coordinator Nan Hager, in a release on the event. Brandon Chamber's Bracewell Cooks for a Cause, YMCA Benefits

The Copper Bell Cafe's "Cooking for a Cause III” celebrity chef event July 9 featured Tammy Bracewell of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce, with proceeds earmarked to send kids to YMCA camps at Brandon, Campo and Camp Christina.

  A crowd of diners made their way to the Copper Bell Cafe in Brandon on July 9, where Tammy Bracewell, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce, served a dish of spaghetti and meatballs for the cause of sending children in need to summer camp programs at Camp Christina, the Brandon Family YMCA and the Campo Family YMCA. For Bracewell, it was her third showing at the Copper Bell Cafe annual fundraiser and each year she has cooked for the same cause. "You get a full belly, you promote a local business, you help kids at the Y and you get free delivery from Take Out Butler," she said. "It's a win-win-win-win for everybody." Greater Brandon Chamber's Free Health Fair at Campo YMCA Today (March 3)

Free health screenings, vendor booths and takeaways March 3 at the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce's annual health fair, at the Campo Family YMCA in Valrico.

  Do you need your blood pressure checked? How about a relaxing chair massage? These free services and more will be offered at the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce's 2012 Health Fair on March 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Campo Family YMCA, 3414 Culbreath Road, Valrico. The fair features health-related industry members the opportunity to exhibit their products and services. More than 700 people attended last year's fair. Health screenings will be provided throughout the day at various exhibit booths. Admission into the event and all screenings are free to the public.
