The "Festival of Trees" at the Westfield Brandon shopping mall features Christmas trees decorated on behalf of charities. Cast your last-minute votes today, Dec. 24.
The Westfield Brandon shopping mall officially kicked off its "Festival of Trees" on Sunday, Nov. 18, and since then it's been up to you — the shopper — to help determine the mall's favorite decorated tree. In return, the Greater Brandon area charity associated with the winning tree will receive the proceeds from an associated raffle. Trees decorated by the charities are located throughout the mall and Dec. 24 is the deadline to vote, at the mall or on Westfield Brandon's Facebook page. The 2012 Tampa Bay Area U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Toy Run is scheduled to start in Tampa and end in Brandon on Nov. 25.
Uncle Mike's Smokehouse Grill at Brandon Harley is the scheduled end point for a motorcycle run Nov. 25 in support of the Marine Toys for Tots 2012 campaign in the Tampa Bay area. The Marine Corps League Detachment 1226 of Riverview, with the aid of riders from 10 motorcyle groups (see list below), will begin the run at the Toys for Tots warehouse at 4479 West Gandy Blvd. in Tampa. Rider registration is from 9:30 to 11 a.m., with a scheduled departure of 11:30 a.m., escorted by riders from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The Plant City Community Choir is set to perform two shows of its reportedly largest holiday show ever. Both stagings of "Christmas by Candlelight" will be at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Plant City.
Promising to "re-tell the Christmas story in a way that Plant City has never heard it," the Plant City Community Choir is planning to put 150 singers and musicians on stage Dec. 8 for its reportedly largest-ever "Christmas by Candlelight" production. Likewise, the group is expecting such a large crowd at its venue, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Plant City, that it is staging two shows this year instead of one. The first offering in the Brandon Ballet's lecture series, featuring artistic director Octavio Martin, and excerpt performances from "The Nutcracker," is set to take place Oct. 17 at The Regent in Riverview.
The year's end approaches, which means another performance of The Nutcracker is coming from the Brandon Ballet company, in residence at The Dance Center on Bloomingdale Avenue. This year the company is offering as well a lecture series featuring Octavio Martin, the company's newly named artistic director, along with excerpt performances from the holiday classic. The lecture series, and accompanying look at the company's professional dancers, kicks off Oct. 17, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at The Regent in Greater Brandon, at 6437 Watson Road in Riverview.
