The Hillsborough County Extension Service in Seffner is kicking off in February a training course for volunteers who seek to become a Florida Master Money Mentor. Volunteers selected will complete about 20 hours of intensive training in basic financial management and mentoring techniques, according to the extension service Web site. The training is scheduled for Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, starting Feb. 12 and ending March 12, at the Hillsborough County Extension Service in Seffner, at 5339 County Road 579. No previous financial education or background in financial services is required. Can playing a musical instrument help with math and other school studies? Time to find out, with a monthly Music Makers Workshop presented by the Florida Academy of Performing Arts, in residence at Music Showcase in Brandon. “This is a great opportunity for children to learn about different instruments and then hopefully decide that they want to learn how to play one because music is fun and help students improve their math and schoolwork,” said Music Showcase spokesperson Deborah Evans, in a news release about the workshops. In time for New Year’s resolutions, the Hillsborough County Health Department is offering a free, six-week fitness and nutrition program to help residents prevent and reduce chronic diseases through weight loss.
A free, six-week fitness and nutrition education program is being offered by the Hillsborough County Health Department at various locations countywide. The aim is to use weight control to both prevent and reduce chronic disease. Over the years, more than 75 percent of the more than 3,000 people who have participatd in the "Get Into Fitness Today" program have lost weight, according to county health officials.
