The Trey Curry Foundation hosted the sixth annual Vine to Wine benefit at The Regent in Riverview, where Mary Beth Curry said some 400 tickets had been sold, including 348 tickets in advance. "Every thing from this event goes directly to A Kid's Place" in Brandon, said Curry's mother, Terry Curry, as the May 10 event was wrapping up in The Regent's grand ballroom. The Trey Curry Foundation was founded in 2008 in memory of Clifton "Trey" Curry III, the son of longtime Brandon residents Terry and Clif Curry. "He would be absolutely blown way by this event," Terry Curry said in remembrance of her son. "He was the kid who was always bringing home people and telling us, 'You need to do this for this person.' He'd walk in here and he'd be amazed…

The turnout for the WittFest 2012 fundraiser at O'Brien's in Brandon was overwhelming, showing that the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, along with the Greater Brandon community, has a big heart for cancer fighter Dan Witt.
Detective Jason Himmeo, with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, made it clear why he was in attendance Dec. 14 at O'Brien's Irish Pub and Family Restaurant in Brandon, for the WittFest 2012: Rockin' the Cause fundraiser for HCSO deputy Dan Witt. "We do this job, which is dangerous enough, and when you have something like this come up, it's worse than what we face on the street," Himmeo said. "Something like this" is the cancer that has stricken the 33-year-old Witt, for whom the fundraiser aims to help both the deputy and his family. "I've worked with Dan since 1999, and he's a fighter," Himmeo said. "We're hoping this [fundraiser] gives him a little bit of a reprieve from the money issues so he can deal with his health issues." …

Motorcycle riders and bikers made their way to Evans Park in Seffner on Dec. 2 for the 19th Annual Cookson Hills Toy Run. Here's a look at why this event continues to grow and has become a signature event in the Greater Brandon area of Seffner.
It's one thing to give, it's another thing to give and receive the joy of seeing that gift in the hands of the beholder, and especially so when those hands belong to children and adults with special needs. Motorcycle riders made their way to Seffner on Dec. 2 for the 19th Annual Cookson Hills Toy Run, a 20-mile trek that begins at the Veterans Memorial Park and Museum in Tampa and ends at Evans Park, adjacent to Burnett Middle School. There, they acted like kids themselves as they watched gift recipients unwrap their toys and gifts. Some bikers came dressed in seasonal attire, which meant a whole bunch of Santas, Mrs. Clauses and elves. A dove release for kids was a highlighted feature as well. For 19 years Sheri and Bill Brown have been…
Captain J.A. Lewis is the 2012 recipient of the Greater Seffner Area Chamber of Commerce's Sharon Carter Community Service Award. At the Cookson Hills Toy Run on Dec. 2, his dove release showed the reasoning behind his recognition.
Captain J.A. Lewis was on duty Dec. 2 at the 19th annual Cookson Hills Toy Run at Evans Park in the Greater Brandon community of Seffner, with 40 doves in tow and a mission to do good unto others. With his company, Stardust Promotions, based just about a mile away from Evans Park, Lewis said he wouldn't have missed the toy run for anything. The 20-mile trek starts at the Veterans Memorial Park and Museum in Tampa and calls upon motorcyclists to ride bearing holiday gifts in a show of compassionate solidarity for special needs people of all ages and now, as well, seniors, veterans with no family and the “forgotten children” of eastern Hillsborough County. "It's here in Seffner, I've lived here for 30 years and this what something …

The Emergency Care Help Organization in Brandon benefited from the ECHO Trunk Show held Nov. 1 at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop. The thrift sale featured gently worn, sometimes new, designer apparel and accessories.
It was a night of deals for shoppers at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop, the venue for this year's ECHO Trunk Show for gently worn designer apparel and accessories. The annual affair was started after volunteers at the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO) in Brandon noticed a good number of upscale items donated to the food bank and clothes closet. ECHO accepts from the community donations of clothes and household furnishings, as well as non-perishable food items, such as canned tuna, boxed spaghetti and jars of applesauce. With proceeds raised at monthly thrift sales, at ECHO's headquarters on Parsons Avenue in Brandon, volunteers in turn can purchase perishable items, such as milk and cheese, for people in need. The ongoing thrift …

Incentives were the order of the day for the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 11, with new members receiving a paint bucket filled with incentive deals. Two sessions were held for the one-day only incentive drive, with the first session alone attracting about 60 incoming members. A large turnout showed up for the fundraiser banquet on behalf of the 2013 Seffner Relay For Life. Community theater actors performed "A History of Broadway" for an event that a cancer survivor helped organize.
A dinner theater performance and buffet dinner fundraiser was held at The Regent in Riverview on Oct. 3 to benefit the 2013 Seffner Relay For Life at Armwood High School. There, Andrea Bearry, the chair of next year's overnight fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, said she has high hopes the Seffner Relay For Life will meet its goal of signing on 50 teams and raising $75,000. Last year's Greater Seffner Relay For Life raised more than $50,000, which is a remarkable feat for a Relay that at one time had almost closed, because of the great effort it took to raise what in comparison were low funds compared to other Tampa Bay area Relay events. But Seffner now is a force to be reckoned with, given last year's draw at the first time …
