A family stood in shock and grace as they watched firefighters and investigators sift through the remains of their Partridge Point home in the Twin Lakes of Brandon community in Valrico.

Update: 'Code Red Fire Spread Rapidly at Twin Lakes of Brandon Home (Photos) ______________ Family members stood together in support Thursday on Partridge Point Trail, in the Twin Lakes of Brandon community in Valrico, where Linda Baldwin watched in shock as firefighters and detectives scoured through her fire-ravaged home. “Just give them your blessings,” said Nina Robnett, whose brother, Craig, is married to Baldwin. “They need prayers, most of all, and strength." The Baldwin home, at 3016 Partridge Point Trail, was consumed by flames earlier today, June 7, as neighbors looked on helplessly. Nobody was in the home when the fire started. The family’s dog was believed to have been inside. Saved from the fire was a bowl of tropical fish. …

Safe Driving Tips for Mix of Fog and Smoke

A 'super-fog' is possible given the predictions for fog developing overnight and the remnants of smoke from today's fire in Riverview. Here's driving tips for navigating near-zero visibility in advance of the Feb. 16 morning commute.

Smoke and fog threaten to create a situation of near-zero visibility going into tomorrow's commute, weather and emergency officials reported today, Feb. 15. The National Weather Service Office in Ruskin reports fog is expected to develop overnight, which could combine with the smoke from today's fire in Riverview to create visibilities near zero or even the development of a "super-fog," officials said. The weather service will issue dense fog and smoke advisories as needed. Fog is defined on the Weather Channel’s Web site as “a cloud at ground level.” “It forms when then temperature drops to the dew point (the temperature at which air is saturated) and invisible water vapor in the air condenses to form suspended water droplets.” Pretty …

Update: I-75 Southbound Ramp to U.S. 301 Shut Down by Brush Fire

The blaze, at 4810 Foxye Lane, directly west of I-75 at U.S. 301, is still burning, officials said.

Updated, 5:02 p.m.: The Interstate 75 southbound ramp to U.S. 301 in Riverview remains closed as a brush fire that destroyed two mobile homes continues to burn, officials said. I-75 from Gibsonton to Highway 60 has reopened, but the Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to control traffic in and around the immediate area of the fire, which is mostly contained, as smoke conditions change. The blaze was reported at 4810 Foxye Lane, directly west of I-75 at U.S. 301, and reportedly covered about five acres. Residents in the area with asthma, bronchitis and other lung or heart conditions should exercise caution, the Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management said in a media release. TECO has a crew on-scene assessing the power lines …

I also thought it was a controlled burn, but the County is very good about giving a heads-up to residents and they typically don't set them so close to structures. Given the dry weather of late this could have been started by a cigarette butt.   more ›

Tampa Warehouse Fire Sends Smoke Over Tornado-Stricken Progress Village, Greater Brandon

An April 2 warehouse fire sends a plume of black smoke over Progress Village, where residents talk about the tornado that struck two days earlier. The smoke drifted east as well, in view of many parts of Greater Brandon.

For Jennifer Milligan, the tower of black smoke billowing behind her mobile home in the Madison Lake Estates development, in the Progress Village area west of Greater Brandon, was more than just a curiosity. What turned out to be, according to TBO.com, smoke from an April 2 warehouse fire at Electrical Engineering Enterprises, 6115 Hartford St., reminded Milligan of the tornado that struck her small neighborhood two days earlier. As Greater Brandonites looked upon the smoke as a curiousity, Milligan and her husband and neighbors looked upon the blaze as a reminder of the horror that struck their lives out of the blue on the last day of March. “It was horrifying and terrifying at the same time,” Milligan said April 2, walking in her …
