Tornado Watch Issued For Brandon Area

The National Weather Service is asking residents to be mindful of conditions as they go about their day, Feb. 26.

A tornado watch is in effect in the Brandon area through 3 p.m. today, Feb. 26. According to the National Weather Service’s Ruskin office, that means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes. Meteorologist Rick Davis says the threat of severe weather is possible later this morning and into this afternoon as “kind of a squall line will move through the area. The potential is there for isolated tornadoes and damaging wind gusts.” Thunderstorms are also possible. Davis urges Brandon residents to keep an eye on the weather as they go through their day. If a tornado warning is issued for the area it means a tornado has been spotted and residents should “seek safety until the warning passes.” While today’s weather is less than …

Tropical Storm Warnings Lifted for Tampa Bay

The region may have escaped the worst of Isaac, which is heading toward the Florida Panhandle and Louisiana.

All tropical storm and tornado warnings have expired for the Tampa Bay area as Isaac continues to move further west over the Gulf of Mexico, forecasters said Monday. The good news for Tampa Bay means bad news for the northern Gulf coast, as Isaac is expected to reach hurricane strength over the next 48 hours as it approaches the Florida Panhandle and Louisiana. The National Hurricane Center warns of significant storm surge in the northern Gulf coast region, where several tropical storm and hurricane warnings are in place. The storm was about 250 miles south of Apalachicola at 11 a.m. Monday and moving at about 14 mph. It had maximum sustained winds of up to 65 mph, forecasters said. Locally, bands of heavy rain and wind gusts are still …

Isaac 'Better Organized,' As it Heads Toward Tampa Bay

The Florida Keys and southern Florida are under a tropical storm watch, as Isaac approaches.

Tropical Storm Isaac is "getting better organized," as it moves northwest toward Haiti, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said Friday night. The Tampa Bay area still is within the cone of uncertainty, with Isaac projected to arrive Tuesday morning, as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm could affect plans for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday in downtown Tampa and runs through Thursday.  The New York Times reported Friday that presidential candidate Mitt Romney's nomination has been moved up two days, from Wednesday to Monday. The change will enable the process to be completed before the storm is forecast to reach the Tampa Bay area. Isaac was moving northwest at around 14 mph as of 11 p.m. Friday but is …

Debby Weakens As Storm Crosses Florida

Now a tropical depression, Debby lost steam after making landfall Tuesday, but not before the storm caused more flooding across the Tampa Bay area.

Storm surge remains the biggest threat to the Tampa Bay area after Tropical Storm Debby made landfall Tuesday. Forecasters cautioned that water levels at high tide could rise up to 3 feet above ground, according to the National Hurricane Center. Even though Tampa Bay communities won't get the drenchings they've had since Debby was over the Gulf, water levels will remain elevated for "the next day or two," the National Hurricane Center said. “With rain bands passing, these waters are probably not going to start retreating until the early hours of Wednesday,” said Anthony Reynes, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Ruskin office.  Debby was downgraded to a tropical depression Tuesday night. County Stretched Thin Responding to Tropical Storm Debby

Hillsborough County's Public Works Department is working overtime to respond to calls and issues.

The rain may have subsided a bit on Monday morning, but calls continued to flood the Hillsborough County Public Works Department. Reports of flooding, washed out streets and other hazards made for a overwhelming day, said Steve Valdez, spokesperson for county public works. "There are more roads then we have resources for," Valdez said. "And more roads then we have signs for. We are just absolutely inundated." Record rainfalls were recorded this weekend as Tropical Storm Debby roared through the Tampa Bay area. The Northwest portion of the county was among the most impacted with 10 inches of rainfall reported in some areas, Valdez said. Four-thousand people in the region had reported power outages Monday, according to TECO. "Right now we …

Gov. Scott Declares State of Emergency For Florida

A Level 1 state of emergency, the lowest declaration, is in effect as Tropical Storm Debby brings rain, winds and flooding to Florida.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday afternoon as the state deals with the effects of Tropical Storm Debby. Scott declared a Level 1 state of emergency, the lowest, which activates storm operations in all 67 counties, the Tampa Bay Times reports. Scott receieved a briefing on the storm's effects before advising Floridians "to be safe, avoid non-essential driving, pay close attention to weather reports and stay away from downed power lines," according to the Times. "I think the most important thing is, one, just use common sense. Be careful," Scott said. "If you're close to a beach, be very cautious. Look at all the beach advisories. If there's any standing water, if there's any flooding, don't drive into it. Be very…

Did You Turn Your Sprinklers Off When Debby Hit?

We've seen some sprinklers running around Brandon in spite of all the rain from Tropical Storm Debby. What's your reaction?

While out in the community checking for damage from Tropical Storm Debby on Monday morning, Brandon Patch spotted eight sprinklers running at the Brandon Recreation Center ballfields, at Sadie Street and Kingsway Road. We posted the photo on Brandon Patch's Facebook page, and our fans had lots to say about sprinklers running in the midst of all the rainfall. "I saw quite a few communities and commercial businesses with sprinklers on this morning. It is a little ridiculous that there aren't rain sensors installed," posted Jen Conrad Frost. "It is not hard to install a water sensor to prevent this. Waste of money watching them go off," wrote Brenda Swader Doggett Cmp. What do you think? Have you seen sprinklers running elsewhere around town …

4,000 TECO Customers Without Power Monday

The public utility warns customers they could still see more outages as Tropical Storm Debby lingers in Tampa Bay.

About 4,000 TECO customers were without power Monday morning in the wake of heavy rain and winds from Tropical Storm Debby. That's far less than the 20,000 between Tampa and Winter Haven who were in the dark during the intense storm Sunday evening, but TECO spokesperson Cherie Jacobs cautioned customers they could still see more outages. "With a storm system hanging over us today, we will likely see additional outages pop up today, and possibly over the next few days," Jacobs said in an email to Patch. A look at the energy company's real-time outage map at 9:45 a.m. Monday showed 3,987 reported outages, with lots of dots around the Tampa Bay area signifying small and medium outages. Most were estimated to be repaired by 1:30 p.m. at the …
