Angela Slater was recognized at the April 2013 Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce meeting, at the membership luncheon sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. Her achievement took root in Brandon.
If it wasn't for her victories at Brandon High, Angela Slater wouldn't have achieved her 500th milestone win at Riverview High, which is why the coach and physical education teacher was recognied April 23 at the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce's membership luncheon, sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. The milestone win came March 26 at East Bay High School, where the Riverview Sharks, trailing with two outs in the final inning, scored a 9-6 victory after a three-run homer by Jordan Phillips. "I was always involved in athletics," said Slater, a physical education teacher, who attended Pensacola Junior College and the University of South Florida. The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce meets Nov. 27 at HCC at The Regent, in the Greater Brandon area of Riverview, in the southeast corner of the Winthrop community, off Watson Road.
The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, at its monthly meeting today, Nov. 27, at HCC at The Regent, is set to welcome 10 new members to the fold. Included in the new class of members are two Brandon businesses: AFLAC (Lynne Herrick) and Javi's Salsa (Sharri Nava). The Red Fork Cafe joins a growing number of new restaurants in the Greater Brandon Area. The cafe's Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting is set for Nov. 21.
The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce has scheduled a Nov. 21 ribbon-cutting for the Red Fork Cafe in the shopping center at Lumsden Road and Kings Avenue. "Red Fork Cafe is a new specialty Caribbean/American restaurant in our community," notes a chamber post. It notes as well that the chef there "has been in the food industry 27 years, was born in Martinique Fort d France and has devoted her life to fresh food." The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce each year holds a Trick or Treat Street event at Riverview High School, where thousands of people show up, with or without costume, to meet with and get goodies from Greater Brandon/Riverview businesses.
Alison Farnan is this year's volunteer coordinator for the 2012 Trick or Treat Street (TOTS) event hosted by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce at Riverview High School, where thousands of people each year arrive for a safe place to dress up and get holiday treats. "It's a good, safe place for parents to bring their kids out and it's a great place to learn more about local businesses that you might not have heard of otherwise," said Farnan, whose own business is Click-Me-Quick, which provides mobile photography booths for personal, business and community events. Sure, the race to see who will be elected the area's next state senator is interesting. But it's not nearly as fun as the race to become Riverview's next honorary mayor. Candidates for the title have been organizing a variety of events to raise funds for their designated charities. The candidate who raises the most money for charity will be declared the 2013 honorary mayor in October. Vying for the title are Elijah Heath of the Rotary Club of FishHawk-Riverview, Molly Blanton of the Gulf Ridge Council of the Boy Scouts of America and Mary Boyd of C1 Bank in Riverview. A small fire at Frost Elementary School on July 26 depleted school supplies in the shared classroom of teachers Holly Cover and Jamy Daily-Herman. Al Higginbotham's aide and Riverview chamber director Tanya Doran spread word of a drive to help.
Two kindergarten teachers at Frost Elementary School are facing the task of rebuilding their shared classroom with weeks to go before the Aug. 21 start of the new school year, according to Deanna Hurley, an aide to Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham. Hurley notified media and chamber interests in an email July 31 about the plight of the two teachers, Holly Cover and Jamy Daily-Herman, who reportedly "lost everything" in their shared classroom because of a fire over the weekend. "Mrs. Cover and Mrs. Daily, are being supported by their co-teachers, who are asking the community for help," Hurley wrote. Candidates for honorary mayor of Riverview are ramping up their fundraisers as the day approaches to declare a winner. Fundraising activities this weekend include a salute to superstars, a cornhole tournament and a family movie night. The race officially kicked off June 10 at Salute! Sports Grill on Boyette Road in Riverview.
