National Prescription 'Take-Back' Campaign Hits Home April 28

It's a good time to clean out medicine cabinets and stem the abuse of prescription drugs, with four collection sites, at Sweetbay Supermarkets in Valrico and Tampa, the Temple Terrace Police Department and MOSI.

  To help stem the abuse of prescription drugs, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is again taking part in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which this year falls on April 28. Representatives from the sheriff's office, along with the Tampa and Temple Terrace police departments, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance will be aiding in the collection of unused or expired prescription medications. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is a good time for citizens to clean out their medicine cabinets of unwanted, unnecessary and expired medications and "to prevent potentially dangerous drugs from getting into the wrong hands," as noted in a sheriff's office announcement. …

Sometimes parents are unknowingly their own child's drug dealer with these unattended pills. Operation Medicine Cabinet Collects Unused, Expired Prescription Drugs

There were 250 deaths related to prescription drug abuse in 2009, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner. In 1995, that number was just 25.

It used to be cocaine and crack, but prescription drugs are increasingly the drug of choice for addicts in Hillsborough County, according to an undercover agent with the sheriff's office. "We have three or four prescription drug overdoses a week now in Hillsborough County alone. It's a very big problem," said the Brandon detective. "It used to be cocaine but now it's Oxycodone, Xanax and those types of drugs that can be obtained legally with a prescription." Those were just some of the drugs collected Saturday, Aug. 27, at Operation Medicine Cabinet, an effort to remove unused or expired prescription drugs from the home. Operation Medicine Cabinet to be Held at Valrico Sweetbay Saturday

Florida Statewide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day takes place Aug. 27.

It's time to clean out those medicine cabinets overflowing with prescription drugs you no longer need. The Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance, law enforcement officials, and Sweetbay Supermarkets are again teaming up with Attorney General Pam Bondi to remove unused or expired medications from the home and safely dispose of them. As part of the ongoing effort to crack down on illegal pill mills and prevent prescription drug abuse, the anti-drug alliance is taking part in the Florida Statewide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
