Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 28 for the next round of Youth Excellence and Achievement (YEA!) Awards, presented annually by the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners to middle- and high-school students who make a difference in the community. Created in 2010, the awards program honors students who "show initiative, innovation and a commitment to themselves and others, while pursuing excellence in a leadership capacity." The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners has reconciled a budget that reduces the county’s total millage rate. If approved, a home valued at $165,000, with a homestead exemption, would be assessed an expected $1 less in property taxes.

Two Hillsborough County commissioners and representatives of the Mosaic company were in attendance Aug. 16 at the open house for parents and students at Frost Elementary School, where a fire July 28 destroyed the kindergarten classrooms of teachers Holly Cover and Jamy Daily-Herman. "At first it was devastating and now it's just been great all the support from everybody," said teacher Holly Cover, in a full report on the gathering posted at Brandon Patch (Fire-Damaged Frost Elementary Bounces Back With Community Support ). Democrat Mark Nash, a Brandon High graduate, is running for the District 4 seat of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. In the race also is Joy Green, no party affiliation, and Republican incumbent Al Higginbotham of Plant City.
Days after marching with a stronghold of candidates at the 2012 Greater Brandon Fourth of July Parade, Mark Nash will be at the Barn Theatre at Winthrop for a campign launch party in his bid for a seat on the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. Nash, a Democrat, is running for the District 4 seat. Also in the race is Joy Green, no party affiliation, and incumbent Republican Al Higginbotham, of Plant City. Higginbotham was at the parade, mingling with participants and viewers, while Nash and his supporters marched in the parade. Higgenbotham has done NOTHING significant for Brandon since first elected after Ronda Storms left. And just try contacting his office staff. Most of the time you will not get a live person, only voicemail. And they never return your call when you leave a message.
