The Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center will celebrate its roots today, April 20, with a special morning celebration followed by summer camp registration, Square 1 Burgers, special activities and a public swim.
It's a 50-year milestone for the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center, as both the past and the present will be celebrated at a public ceremony today, April 20, followd by a public swim and summer-camp registration. Sports demonstrations and complementary sliders, provided by Square 1 Burgers & Bar, are on today's agenda as well. (See program below.) Charter members will be recognized, including Beverly Knox, Ted Pitts, Marie Wood and the Noriega family. Also noted as charter members are Harry Vildibill and Janet and Sue Moucha, according to BSAC officials. The Greater Brandon area lost one of its older strip shopping centers with last week's demolition work at the corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Lithia-Pinecrest Road.
One of the Greater Brandon area's oldest strip shopping centers has been torn down to make way for a Wawa gas station and food mart at the corner of Bloomingdale Avenue and Lithia-Pinecrest Road. "Some people may have seen that area as an eyesore, but for those of us who have been here for many, many years, it was a part of our history in the community," said Lisa Rodriguez, a past honorary mayor of Brandon. "A part of our history has been torn down, to become what, just another gas station?" she added. "And it's not just a gas station. It's a mega-gas station. The Courtney Campbell Causeway is a popular roadway for commuters, shoppers, beachgoers and visitors from the Greater Brandon area into Tampa and through to Clearwater, but what do you know about the road’s namesake? The Man Campbell, from Chillicothe, MO, served as a second lieutenant in the army during World War I, according to the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress. After the Great War he studied law. Following graduation, he started a practice in Tampa in 1923, according to his 1971 obituary in the St. Petersburg Times. He also worked as a developer, banker and a farmer growing citrus crops. Campbell was vice president and Florida manager of a company that manufactured packaging and mechanical processing equipment …

Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee aims to capture the history of his office, formed more than 160 years ago, with a museum for which the first display will be unveiled this week.
Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee on Oct. 11 is scheduled to unveil the first display for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office History Museum, an initiative he kicked off last year to caputre the history of the office formed more than 160 years ago. The unveiling is set to take place at the sheriff's office's training center in the Greater Brandon area of Tampa, at 1409 Falkenburg Road. Gee reportedly asked several members of his staff last year to begin the process of preserving office history, the first project of which has been created by Major Clyde Eisenberg, Major Alan Hill, Lieutenant Jim Bradford and University of South Florida History Professor Phil Levy.
