Former Candidate Talks 2014 Politics at Brandon Chamber Dinner

Mark Nash talked about his future plans as the 2014 election gains interest among those with tenure on the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, Hillsborough County School Board and Tampa City Council.

Mark Nash never thought it would be easy, his unsuccessful bid to replace Al Higginbotham in the District 4 seat of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners. “I knew that I chose a tall hill to climb, there were no ifs, ands or buts about it,” Nash said Friday night, at the Feb. 1 membership dinner hosted by the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce at The Regent in Riverview.  “But people saw how passionate I was, how I believe we need to be smarter about what we do out here [in the Greater Brandon area] and throughout the entire county.” Higginbotham, a Republican, returned to his District 4 seat after a successful run against Nash, a Democrat, and Joy Green, who ran with no party affiliation. Next up for Nash is an …

Mark Nash ran a respectable campaign for Commissioner, and I was looking forward to his new eyes and ears. It's evident that we need different and updated perspectives on this Board in order for this County to move forward in a healthy way. Good luck in your future endeavors, Mr. Nash.   more ›

Hillsborough Republicans Cry Foul on Obama's Same-Sex Marriage Stance

Art Wood, chair of the Hillsborough County Republican Party, headquartered in Brandon, issues a strong reaction to President Obama's televised endorsement of same-sex marriages, calling it "a strategic endorsement."

Hillsborough Republicans are calling President Obama's comments May 9 concerning legalizing same-sex marriage a ploy to garner votes this fall. In a television interview May 9, Obama publicly endorsed making same-sex marriage legal. The interview with ABC's Robin Roberts was broadcast yesterday afternoon. “I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama said to Roberts. Obama's remarks prompted an online reaction from the Hillsborough County Republican Party. “We understand that everything Mr. Obama is doing at this point, including his speeches, appearances and endorsements, is a part of a calculated and timed strategy to …

Alafia Republicans Pumped To Topple Obama

State Sen. Ronda Storms speaks at the April 30 Alafia Republican Club meeting, held to recruit volunteers for the Republican National Convention in Tampa, phone banks, precinct walks, registration drives and sign-waving activities.

While area Democrats were busy preparing to open a President Obama re-election office in Riverview on May 2, members of the Alafia Republican Club met to make plans of their own to defeat the sitting president this fall. There was standing room only at the club's April 30 meeting, the largest turnout to date, said club President Jeff Lukens. "It's a big year, and this is the largest crowd we've ever had, but we hope to outgrow this room," he said. Deborah Cox-Roush, a club member as well as a member of the Republican National Committee, said it was rewarding to see so many Republicans in attendance. Cox-Roush is director of volunteers for the secured perimeter of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Aug. 27-30. She invited club …

East Hillsborough Democratic Club Talks Politics With State Rep. Randolph

The East Hillsborough Democratic Club welcomed a special guest to Barnacles on Providence Road, where they talked about issues facing Florida Democrats during their monthly meeting.

Dozens of Tampa Bay area residents gathered Tuesday night in Brandon for a chance to ask tough questions to someone they figured might have some answers. They were not disappointed. State Rep. Scott Randolph of District 36 (Orlando) met with the East Hillsborough Democratic Club at Barnacles Restaurant for their monthly meeting to discuss the issues facing Florida Democrats. Topics ranged from voter supression laws, Republican political tactics, women's rights and the truth about tax cuts, leaving those in attendance feeling slightly more educated than when they walked in. "He was very informative," Tampa's Marvin Baity said. "It was real thought provoking so I'm glad my sister brought me out here. I'll definitely come back, especially …

Local Republicans to Talk Campaigns, Washington Tonight in Greater Brandon

The Republican Party of Hillsborough County will meet tonight at The River of Tampa Bay Education Center.

Like any other election year, political parties are readying themselves for a vicious battle for power this November. In August, Tampa will host the 2012 GOP Convention, but there is plenty of other work for the party to do locally. That's where Art Wood and the Republican Party of Hillbsborough County come in. Tonight, March 20, the group will meet and continue discussions on what they're doing to get ready for election time. "One focus of the meeting will be to answer the question: are you better off now than you were four years ago?" said Wood, chairman of the HCRP. "We'll have a guest speaker to talk about what is going on in Washington and then we'll be working on growing membership and having our campaign leaders give their reports …
