Showcase Players On Stage With 'Parade' at the James McCabe Theater

In residence at Music Showcase in Brandon, the Showcase Players, through the Florida Academy of Performing Arts, is on stage this month and next with "Parade" at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico.

Music educator and director Migue Oquendo calls Parade "one of the best shows that nobody knows about," which is why he has staged the production three times with the Showcase Players, in residence at Music Showcase in Brandon, and now through the Florida Academy of Performing Arts (FAOPA). "The show has great music and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it so much more intriguing," Oquendo said. "It gives a lot of history, in terms of teaching people about racism and intolerance. Sometimes it's important to go back to these roots and see what it was like." "It's fun to bring together a bunch of the most popular songs from the most popular Broadway musicals together in one revue," Pazo said in an interview July 28, hours before the final curtain of the closing night performance of the third revue. Lisa Westcott, regional director for the Joshua Generation Musical Theater and Production Company, departs from her homeschool education duties to join, with her daughter, a Village Players community theater production of "Annie."

Hannah Westcott said she isn't a bit surprised her mother upstaged her at auditions for the Village Players production of "Annie." In fact, Westcott, 11, is both tickled and proud her mother took the plunge to test her talents, showing for her efforts a leading role in the musical based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip. "My mom was at auditions with me, and she wanted to audition really badly and she just stood up and auditioned," Westcott said. "I said, 'Go, go, do it!' " Now, Lisa Westcott will be practicing what she teaches with a starring role as Miss Hanningan, the tyrannical overseer of a 1930s orphanage, in the December stagings of "Annie" at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico.
