The 2012 season comes to an end for the Newsome Wolves, but not before a stunning finish that ends in Osceloa Kissimmee, with an almost-win in the Class 7A-Region 2 final game.
After last week's defeat of the undefeated Durant Cougars, the Newsome Wolves almost did it again, falling 3 points shy of defeating undefeated Osceola High in Kissimmee and claiming the FHSAA Class 7A-Region 2 title. Instead, the Osceola Kowboys came out ahead, 21-18, but not before sweating it out for the first two quarters, when Newsome led 10-7 going into the third quarter. The Wolves held Osceola scoreless in both the first and fourth quarters, and vice versa. It was the Kowboys' second touchdown in the third quarter that sealed the Wolves' fate. The Newsome Wolves, after upsetting the undefeated Durant Cougars in FHSAA football Class 7A-Region 2 playoff action last week, take aim Nov. 30 against another undefeated team, the Osceola Kissimmee Kowboys.
The Newsome Wolves, following last week's 21-14 win over the undefeated Durant Cougars, advance to the third round of Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) football playoffs, with a Nov. 30 face-off against the undefeated Osceole Kissimmee Kowboys. The Wolves face the Kowboys (12-0, 5-0 in league play), ranked 307 and 22, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com. Meanwhile, the Wolves (8-4 overall, 4-1 in league play) are ranked 889 nationally and 68 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. The Wolves this season beat East Bay, Chamberlain, Brandon, Riverview, Plant City and Bloomingdale. In the FHSAA playoffs, the Wolves beat Gaither (52-7) and Durant (21-14). The crosstown rivalry between the Durant Cougars and Newsome Wolves takes on a deeper urgency Nov. 23 with the regional semifinal round of the 2012 FHSAA football playoffs. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Ron Frost Stadium in Plant City.

It's a season to remember for the Durant Cougars, who came home from Riverview with their ninth win of the season. Brandon loses by 1, Newsome makes it a winning season (at the expense of Plant City) and Armwood comes through with a fourth-quarter win.
There have been lots of Cougar moments this football season and they're all leading up to what likely is to become Durant's perfect season. The Cougars on Nov. 2 traveled to Riverview and came home with their ninth win of the season, beating the Sharks 57-27. Durant, under head coach Mike Gottman, entered the game ranked 354 in the nation and 31 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. En route to a perfect season, the Cougars this season have beaten Freedom, Alonso, Brandon, Wharton, Plant City, Chamberlain, Newsome, East Bay and Riverview (see chart below). The undefeated Durant Cougars look to add a seventh game to their winning streak with their Oct. 18 contest against the Newsome Wolves. The game is scheduled to start 7:30 p.m. at Durant High School in Plant City.

The Thursday night game is possible because there is no school Friday, which marks the end of the first grading period. Durant faces the Wolves (3-3 overall, 2-0 in league play), ranked nationally and in the state at 3,507 and 210, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com.
