Votes Sought for Local 'American Idol' Contestant, Mom Leads the Charge

Dan Wood, a graduate of Newsome High School and the "Singing Server" in Apollo Beach, begins his quest for the 12th season "American Idol" crown. HIs mother, Cindy Wood, said she was with her son for the taping of the Feb. 6 and 7 shows.

  His “golden ticket” in hand, the Newsome High graduate known as the “Singing Server” at the Circles Bar & Grill in Apollo Beach is among the 20 male contestants vying Feb. 6 and 7 for enough votes to advance in the 12th season of American Idol competition. The 20 female contestants are set to perform next Wednesday and Thursday nights, Feb. 13 and 14. Part One of the American Idol Hollywood Round airs 8 p.m. on FOX TV. Woods' mother, Cindy, said she isn't sure when her son will perform, "but I'm leaning toward tonight." In Wood's corner will be fellow graduates from Newsome High School, co-workers at Circles Bar & Grill in Apollo Beach and friends from St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico, where he attends church. Greater Brandon Fans Set To Support Another Local 'American Idol' Contestant

Following in the footsteps of Jeremy Rosado, Dan Wood, a Newsome High graduate, has been voted on to Hollywood for the chance to win the "American Idol" crown. Wood's nod came from judges Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj.

    At auditions Jan. 24 in Baton Rouge, La., Dan Wood, a 2008 Newsome High School graduate, received his "golden ticket" from American Idol judges Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj to head to Hollywood to compete as a season 12 semifinalist. Born in Houston, Wood, 22, moved with his family to FishHawk Ranch, where he participated in cross country at Newsome High School and pursued his love of singing at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico, as the only male member of the Life Teen Choir. His mother, Cindy, served as the adult education and formation minister of the church until relocating to Virginia two years ago. Durant Football: Undefeated Season Advances With Newsome Win

The undefeated Durant High School Cougars beat the Newsome Wolves on Oct. 18 to make it a 7-0 season. The game was played on Durant's home turf in Plant City.

  Durant High School's head football coach, Mike Gottman, had nothing but praise for his team last night, after the Cougars remained undefeated with their 38-28 win against the Newsome Wolves at the Ron Frost Stadium in Plant City. "Celebrate it," he told his players after their key Class 7A-District 8 win, in a post-game huddle on Durant's home turf. "And come back to school safe and ready to work, to work as a team." Gottman also behooved his team to "stay humble," which he emphasized in a post-game interview is his personal attitude as well. Brandon at Newsome Falls Short Again, Loss Streak Extended to 5

The Brandon Eagles lost their fifth game of the season with a 35-13 upset at Newsome High School on Oct. 5. Brandon has yet to win a game this season.

  Newsome on its home turf in Lithia extended its win streak to three games with an Oct. 5 upset over the Brandon Eagles (35-13), who went home with their fifth loss in as many games this football season. It was the second conference game for both teams. Newsome is 2-0 in league play and 3-3 overall. Brandon, respectively, is 0-2 and 0-5. Following a rain-delay start, the Eagles took to the field after a 37-14 loss to Sickles the week before. Meanwhile, the Gryphons on Oct. 5 went home with a late-game loss to the Armwood Hawks, who left the Lyle Flagg Field in Seffner with their fifth win in a 5-1 season. Brandon Football: Eagles Away at Newsome (Oct. 5)

Game time Oct. 5 is 7:30 p.m. for the Brandon High School Eagles, who travel to Lithia to face the Newsome Wolves.

  The Brandon High Eagles hope to snap their losing streak tonight as the Newsome Wolves look to extend theirs. The Eagles, coming off a loss to Sickles (14-37), travel to Litha tonight, Oct. 5, to face the Wolves on their home turf. (Meanwhile, the Armwood Hawks are set to play the Gryphons at home.) Newsome's Namesake Mourns the Death of His Wife, Velma Jean

Velma Jean Newsome, the wife of Joe E. Newsome, the namesake of Newsome High School and a Hillsborough County School Board member for more than 25 years, died July 16. She was 68.

  A member of the First Baptist Church of Plant City, Velma Jean Newsome, 68, died in her home on Monday, July 16, survived by her husband of 49 years, Joe E. Newsome, the namesake of the high school on FishHawk Boulevard. Born Feb. 19 1944 to the late Steve and Obera Simmons, Velma Jean Newsome "was a loving wife, mother and grandmother." She is survived by her husband, a longtime Plant City pharmacist, who served on the Hillsborough County School Board for more than 25 years. Survivors include as well her children, Dee Parker, Katie Varnum and Dennis Newsome, and their respective spouses, Kenneth, Scott and Melissa; sisters, Marvella Harrell, Dell Ritter and Joann Woods; eight grandchildren and "many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, …

Olympic Trials Welcome Brandon Bluewave, BSAC-Trained Swimmers

Brandon Bluewave swimmers Maddie Hess and Barbara Carabello join Jason Taylor, Tyler Ball and Sharla Milne at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials next week. All five swimmers received training at the Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center.

  Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center swimmers Maddie Hess and Barbara Carabello, along with three other swimmers with BSAC training, are heading to Omaha next week to participate in the 2012 United States Team Olympic Trials in the hopes of making the U.S. Olympic swim team. Hess, 15, and Carabello, 16, attend Newsome High School and swim for the Brandon Bluewave swim team coached by Justin Corriea. Plant City Set To Go as the 2012 Relay For Life Season Winds Up

The Plant City Relay For Life runs April 20-21, poised to add dramatically to the total funds raised to date in Southeastern Hillsborough County, at Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon, Lennard, Newsome and Riverview high schools.

The American Cancer Society's 2012 Relay For Life season in Southeastern Hillsborough County wraps up this weekend with the area's historically largest event, at Plant City High School, poised to raise the totals significantly. Opening ceremonies for the Plant City Relay For Life kick off today, April 20, at 6 p.m., with the Survivor Lap commencing 30 minutes later. Plant City is the last of this year's seven Relays For Life in Southeastern Hillsborough County. Collectively, the six Relays For Life to date have collected $633,654, according to preliminary figures obtained from the American Cancer Society unit office on Oakfield Drive in Brandon. Cancer Fighters Score Big as Relay For Life Season Heats Up

Preliminary totals are in for the American Cancer Society’s first three of six Relays For Life in Eastern Hillsborough County, with fundraising receipts in excess of $375,000. Seffner posted the largest percentage increase.

2011 Relay For Life Updates for Brandon, Bloomingdale, FishHawk, Plant City, Riverview and Seffner

We'll update you weekly on what has become the major local fundraiser of the year in terms of people participating and money raised: the American Cancer Society's grassroots Relay For Life.

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life season is underway and proceeds raised so far from the six events in Eastern Hillsborough County have collectively raised just shy of $200,000. That’s good news to people like Mary Coram, a breast cancer survivor and breast care educator at Total Imaging on Parsons Avenue in Brandon.
