Two Brandon wrestlers add to their list of accomplishments.
Two Brandon High School wrestlers have been named 2012-13 InterMat High School All-Americans. Duly noted were seniors Kevin Norstrem and Travis Berridge, at 138 pounds and 170 pounds, respectively. The list was published April 24 at InterMatwrestle.com. At The Lakeland Center on Feb. 16, Kevin Norstrem ended his high school wrestling career with a fifth individual state title, a moment that he memorialized in the arms of legendary head coach Russ Cozart, whose hug was witnessed by the crowd that had risen to give the 138-pound wrestler a standing ovation, according to a TBO. com report. Angela Slater was recognized at the April 2013 Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce meeting, at the membership luncheon sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. Her achievement took root in Brandon.
If it wasn't for her victories at Brandon High, Angela Slater wouldn't have achieved her 500th milestone win at Riverview High, which is why the coach and physical education teacher was recognied April 23 at the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce's membership luncheon, sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. The milestone win came March 26 at East Bay High School, where the Riverview Sharks, trailing with two outs in the final inning, scored a 9-6 victory after a three-run homer by Jordan Phillips. "I was always involved in athletics," said Slater, a physical education teacher, who attended Pensacola Junior College and the University of South Florida. "I played my way through school, on athletic scholarships." …

The Armwood Hawks travel to Gainesville tonight, Nov. 30, for the FHSAA Class 6A-Region 2 final. Arwmood advanced after last week's 9-7 revenge defeat of the Hillsborough High Terriers, who beat the Hawks 3-0 earlier in the season.

The Newsome Wolves, following last week's 21-14 win over the undefeated Durant Cougars, advance to the third round of Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) football playoffs, with a Nov. 30 face-off against the undefeated Osceole Kissimmee Kowboys. The Wolves face the Kowboys (12-0, 5-0 in league play), ranked 307 and 22, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com. Meanwhile, the Wolves (8-4 overall, 4-1 in league play) are ranked 889 nationally and 68 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.
