Activists Rally Against Gas Station in Wetlands

Protestors have been in view at the corner of South Kings Avenue and Lumsden Road, where Hillsborough County Commissioners are considering construction of a RacTrac gas station.

At the corner of Lumsden Road and South Kings Avenue, a committed group of community activists has been periodically protesting the proposed development of a RaceTrac gas station and convenince store on land designated as wetlands. Sporting signs that read, "Deny 12-0263," in reference to RaceTrac's application number, the protestors were greeted April 5 with honks by passing motorists at what is one of the Greater Brandon area's busiest intersections. Their protest is in advance of the April 9 meeting of the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, who are scheduled to discuss the issue in a land-use meeting. Zoning hearing officer Steven Luce recommended against approving the plan in November, according to a Tampa Bay Times …

It's time for the county commissioners to stand up to big business and do what's right by the citizens who live in the area. Destroying wetlands to create yet another traffic nightmare, not to mention the environmental impact this will have, is not in the best interest of those of us who live and travel in the area every day.   more ›

Wetlands Rule Ignored to Allow Gas Station Development

Hillsborough County Commissioners determined that a marsh's destruction should not impede the proposed development, reports TBO.com.

A wetland may be destroyed to develop a Racetrac gas station and store at the southeast corner of Kings Avenue and Lumsden Road, according to TBO.com. The Hillsborough County Commission directed zoning hearing master Steve Luce not to let the marsh's destruction impede the proposed development, according to TBO.com. Luce then reveresed his own earlier ruling against the development, because it would destroy the wetland. Instead he agreed that the plan should go before the county commmission and and the Environmental Protection Commission for a vote in April. The EPC is composed of county commissioners. According to TBO.com, environmental activists are stunned by the move: "This case has been handled in a way we have never witnessed before…

Potential RaceTrac at Kings Ave. and Lumsden Road Debated

There are already two other gas stations near that intersection.

The building of a RaceTrac gas station on the corner of Kings Ave. and Lumsden Road in Brandon is stalled over an issue regarding the destruction of a wetland area. There are already two other gas stations near that intersection. A Mobil sits on the northeast corner and a Citgo is just south of the intersection on Kings Ave. On Monday, Feb. 18 the issue was back before Zoning Hearing Master Steve Luce. According to an article on TBO.com: “Zoning Hearing Master Steve Luce had already recommended against the rezoning once because of the wetlands. But this time, he had orders from Hillsborough commissioners not to hear discussion of the wetland issue, which is under appeal with the Environmental Protection Commission.” To read more about the …

Booster parents for the Brandon High School football team, and their counterparts at Durant, are pushing fans to participate in this year’s RaceTrac competition for the top prize in a points-for-purchases contest. "We're behind in the contest, but Brandon didn't have its first home game until Sept. 14, when we gave out [contest] key tags in the stands," said Brandon booster parent Cheryl Cabbage-Stanbro, whose son last year played with the Eagles. This year he's playing basketball only, but Cabbage-Stanbro remains active with the football boosters. "We gave out key tags in the stands, at school, to all the coaches, the teachers and the booster parents," Cabbage-Stanbro added. She made her comments in the hours leading up to the Brandon-…
