Red-Light Cameras Get Boost From Court Ruling

Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeals has upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss a challenge to the constitutionality of red-light safety cameras.

Don't expect the red-light camera at Brandon Town Center Drive and State Road 60 to go away any time soon. In fact, you could be seeing more red-light cameras at intersections throughout Hillsborough County. Florida’s Fourth District Court of Appeals has upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss a challenge to the constitutionality of red-light safety cameras in the case of Salvatore Altimari vs. the State of Florida and the City of West Palm Beach. Speed and red-light cameras are a type of automated enforcement technology used to detect and deter speeders and red-light runners. The cameras posted at intersections capture images of vehicles committing traffic violations – most commonly, speeding and red-light running. Twenty-one states, …

The devices do not discriminate based upon income, since they do not ticket "people that actually run red lights", instead the owner is ticketed and when they are eventually able to go to court they are guilty until proven innocent. Things like innocent until proven guilty, a court hearing from the mailed ticket, and validating evidence in court mater little to big-government politicians like Sen…   more ›

The statistics indicate a very small percentage of drivers run red lights. They also indicate a marked increase in collisions where these cameras are installed due to a variety of reasons, including rational people suddenly stopping unsafely early in the yellow cycle to avoid a ticket. The traffic light operators and municipalities are looking at revenue and telling us it is for public safety. …   more ›

Red-Light Runners, Close Calls Captured on Video

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has released another round of red-light runners that shows a near collision, a pedestrian's close call, a motorist barreling through an intersection after the light had been red for 98 seconds, and more.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has posted a seventh round of video clips showing what happens when "aggressive, impatient or inatttentive motorists" run red lights at busy intersections. The aim is to raise public awareness and cut back on the incidence of red-light runners. The latest round of clips show, among other things, a near collision, a pedestrian's close call and a motorist barreling through an intersection after the light had been red for 98 seconds. Through the county's Red Light Enforcement Program, deputies began to issue notices of violation on December 29, 2009. Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies review each photograph and corresponding data to determine if there is a violation of Florida State Statute 316.…

Cameras can't stop the real late runners, who cause the crashes. (If cameras worked, sellers wouldn't have these videos.) Real late runners (2+ secs. into the red) don't do it on purpose. They don't know (a visitor) or don't remember (distracted or impaired "local") that a camera is up ahead, so the presence of a camera won't stop them. To cut these real late runs, improve the visual cues that …   more ›
