Who Is Angela Slater? Why Should Brandon Take Note?

Angela Slater was recognized at the April 2013 Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce meeting, at the membership luncheon sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. Her achievement took root in Brandon.

  If it wasn't for her victories at Brandon High, Angela Slater wouldn't have achieved her 500th milestone win at Riverview High, which is why the coach and physical education teacher was recognied April 23 at the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce's membership luncheon, sponsored by the Riverview High School Athletic Booster Club. The milestone win came March 26 at East Bay High School, where the Riverview Sharks, trailing with two outs in the final inning, scored a 9-6 victory after a three-run homer by Jordan Phillips. "I was always involved in athletics," said Slater, a physical education teacher, who attended Pensacola Junior College and the University of South Florida. "I played my way through school, on athletic scholarships."  …

Video: Principal Practices What He Preaches

Riverview High School Principal Robert "Bob" Heilmann talks about the "culture of giving" as he celebrates with students and staff their national School Blood Drive Award.

  Recognized for being an 8-gallon blood donor, Riverview High School principal Robert Heilmann received high praise from Mike Pratt of OneBlood Inc., who on April 4 heralded the school's 2013 receipt of the national School Blood Drive Award. "He just exudes leadership," Pratt said. "He's instilling a sense of community responsibility in these young people." At the April 4 celebration in the Riverview High School cafeteria, packed with students, teachers and staff, Heilmann offered a glimpse into the very real relationship he has with his community driven school community, including alumni and parents, which "over the past five years have generously given a total of 7,011 blood donations during the 25 blood drives held on campus," …

The Frenzie Returns With '2 Guys, 2 Girls, 1 Stage'

The Frenzie community theater troupe is back on stage with "a non-musical glimpse at relationships." The four-actor show is on stage at Riverview High School for one weekend only, March 28-30.

  The Frenzie is back on stage in the Greater Brandon area with a "non-musical glimpse at relationships" starring four actors, Pedro Amaral, Justin Batten, Kim Davis and Amber McCollum. Appropriately titled, "2 Guys, 2 Girls, 1 Stage," the show is a compilation of one-acts that director and Frenzie co-founder Michael Mercer put together for a unique theater experience on the Riverview High School stage. "The show deals with all kinds of relationships, love relationships, family relationships, some really funny and some are much more serious," said Mercer, who founded The Frenzie Life Theatre, now known as The Frenzie Performance Factory, with his wife, Beverly Mercer, in 2007. Eastern Hillsborough Relays Start Strong, Build Momentum

The American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County started strong with events at Riverview and Newsome high schools. Events are coming at Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon and Plant City high schools.

  Successful events at Newsome and Riverview high schools marked the opening round of the American Cancer Society's 2013 Relay For Life season in Eastern Hillsborough County, with close to $190,000 raised at these two Relays alone, according to the latest online account. Additional Relays for Eastern Hillsborough County are scheduled in the weeks ahead for Armwood, Bloomingdale, Brandon and Plant City high schools. Collectively, as of 5 a.m. March 23, the six sites in Eastern Hillsborough County had reported 249 teams, 3,634 participants and $274,045.14 raised. (See chart below.) The Riverview Idol contest at Riverview High School returns for a final round tonight, March 19, with a live band and Valrico's 2012 "American Idol" Top 13 finisher Jeremy Rosado set to perform and judge.

  Jeremy Rosado of Valrico, cheered on by the Greater Brandon community in his 2012 run for the American Idol crown, is set to both perform and judge at tonight's Riverview Idol competition, at which a new top singer will be crowned. Five singers have advanced to the final round of competition, which is set to begin tonight, March 19, at 7 p.m., at Riverview High School. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $5.   Ten singers have advanced to the second round of 2013 Riverview Idol competition after performing with 15 of their peers at Riverview High School on Tuesday, Feb. 26. In all, about 45 students had auditioned to compete for a Top 25 spot. 'American Idol' Contestant Jeremy Rosado To Judge, Perform at Riverview Idol

Riverview High's Riverview Idol begins tonight, Feb. 26, with three nights of competition scheduled before a crown is earned. At the final round in March, Jeremy Rosado of Valrico, a 2012 Top 13 "American Idol" finisher, will both perform and judge.

  Jeremy Rosado, cheered on by the Greater Brandon community in his 2012 run for the American Idol crown, is set to judge the final round of the Riverview Idol contest in March. The first of three rounds begins tonight, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m., at Riverview High School. Twenty-five students are vying to take home the seventh-year crown. Advancing through audition from a field of 40 to 45 contestants, "all 25 students will sing [tonight], and each audience member will get one ballot on which they will circle 10 names," said Liz Stewart, the school's choral director. Durant Football: Will Perfect Season Advance in Riverview Tonight?

The undefeated Durant Cougars are hungry for their ninth win in a perfect season with their contest tonight, Nov. 2, against the Riverview Sharks. The game is scheduled to start 7:30 p.m. at Riverview High School.

  The undefeated Durant Cougars, following last week's 28-3 win against the East Bay Indians, travel to Riverview tonight, Nov. 2, to face the Riverview Sharks. Durant faces the Sharks (2-7 overall, 0-4 in league play), ranked nationally and in the state at 8,661 and 403, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com. The Cougars (8-0 overall, 4-0 in league play) are ranked 354 in the nation and 31 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. The Cougars this season beat Freedom, Alonso, Brandon, Wharton, Plant City, Chamberlain, Newsome and East Bay (see chart below). Trick or Treat Street Draws Thousands of Costumed Revelers

Organized by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Hillsborough Parks, Conservation and Recreation Department, was held at Riverview High School.

  A steady stream of little vampires, petite princesses and miniature monsters collected candy and other treats from booths sponsored by dozens of area businesses during the annual Trick or Treat Street Oct. 20. The event, organized by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department, attracted thousands of residents.
