The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce each year holds a Trick or Treat Street event at Riverview High School, where thousands of people show up, with or without costume, to meet with and get goodies from Greater Brandon/Riverview businesses.
Alison Farnan is this year's volunteer coordinator for the 2012 Trick or Treat Street (TOTS) event hosted by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce at Riverview High School, where thousands of people each year arrive for a safe place to dress up and get holiday treats. "It's a good, safe place for parents to bring their kids out and it's a great place to learn more about local businesses that you might not have heard of otherwise," said Farnan, whose own business is Click-Me-Quick, which provides mobile photography booths for personal, business and community events. Farnan said this is her first year involved with the event, which needs "150 to 200 volunteers, easily." The event, presented as well by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's …

Closing night is Aug. 11 at 8 p.m. for The Frenzie Performance Factory production of "Xanadu," affectionately called a "silly little piece of theater" by director Pedro Amaral. His sister, Clara, is the show's musical director and conductor.
Four years ago Pedro Amaral and his sisetr, Clara, traveled to New York City with $100 between them and two goals in mind: "to see a Broadway show and to not starve," Amaral wrote in his director's notes for the August production of Xanadu. He called it a "series of lucky happenstances" that the siblings were able to purchase $26 tickets apiece for fourth-row seats to Xanadu, at the Helen Hayes Theatre at 240 West 44th St. "What followed, and please don't judge, was the most profound theatre experience I've had in my entire life," Amaral noted. "Disco balls," coupled with "magical murals" and "glowy ribbons" attracted Amaral's senses and, as if in answer to the critics, he added: "It's not that Xandadu's message was particularly …

Preliminary totals are in for the American Cancer Society’s first three of six Relays For Life in Eastern Hillsborough County, with fundraising receipts in excess of $375,000. Seffner posted the largest percentage increase.
Lori Libhart is certain of one thing. Armwood High School, she said, “is where we needed to be.” As president-elect of the Greater Seffner Area Chamber of Commerce, Libhart was speaking on behalf of the volunteers, organizers, participants and community, school and business interests that came together to break a fundraising record at the American Cancer Society’s Greater Seffner Relay For Life. This year the event, for the first time, was held at Armwood High School, which under its new principal, Mike Ippolito, allowed for the use of the school’s football field and track. “It’s where we needed to be and it’s a bigger, more [fitting venue] than what we had at Burnett Middle School,” Libhart added, in reference to the site for the …

Sean Michael Buchanan performed on the Brandon Idol stage and in numerous community theater and Riverview High School theater productions. He leaves behind an infant daughter.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Information about a memorial fund set up to help benefit the victim's daughter has been clarified. Details of the crime have been updated in response to corrections and clarifications issued by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office to its initial reports. His goal was to “stretch his vocals” and to give the show a little variety. So when it was his turn on the Brandon Idol stage in 2010, Sean Michael Buchanan gave it his all with “Jeremy,” a Pearl Jam song meant to rock the stage. “Pearl Jam is a hard band to sing,” Buchanan said at the time. “I figured if I could pull it off it would be good.” Buchanan, 26, is being remembered in the Greater Brandon area as the guy with a great voice, strong dance moves and a great …

That’s good news to people like Mary Coram, a breast cancer survivor and breast care educator at Total Imaging on Parsons Avenue in Brandon. (Related Coverage: Passion Reigns at Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce Health Fair at Campo Family YMCA.) “There are a lot of people who don’t know how to do a breast exam and a lot of them don’t get the mammograms,” Coram said at the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce Health Fair held on March 5 at the Campo Family YMCA in Valrico. “Over the past three years we’ve seen more cases of women being diagnosed with …
