Rotarian Ann Wade Recounts Her Childhood Battle With Polio

Ann Wade, wife of Tom Wade, the district governor of Rotary District 6890, spoke to Greater Brandon Rotarians about her childhood struggle with polio at Hope Haven Hospital in Florida. She works to help Rotary International eradicate polio worldwide.

  The ultimate goal for Rotary International is to eradicate polio, which is a mission that strikes home for Ann Wade, wife of Tom Wade, the district governor of Rotary District 6890. The district covers the Greater Brandon area, where the Rotary Club of Brandon South met earlier this month at the Buckhorn Springs Golf & Country Club in Valrico.  There, Tom Wade discussed district news and club updates, including the Rotary drive to rid the world of polio, which he reported dates back 5,000 years. Wade introduced his wife, who stood up to speak about her personal battle with polio, as a youngster barely old enough to go to school. Thanks for covering the meeting with Rotary District Governor Wade and his wife. This goal of eradicting Polio is a major world goal for Rotary and hundreds of millions have been spent world wide to stop this. Wars have stopped to give vacines to the locals world wide, and we have had Rotarians in Brandon that have helped with that program in India. Thanks again for your article.   more ›

Parade of Hats Showcased at Rotary's Mad Hatter's Tea Party (Photos)

The Rotary Club of South Brandon hosts the Fifth Annual Mad Hatter's Tea Party at the Cross Creek Ranch bed and breakfast and event facility in Dover.

  The annual Mad Hatter's Tea Party hosted by the Rotary Club of Brandon South serves as a major fundraiser for the group's yearlong support of Greater Brandon non-profits and charities. Beneficiaries of Rotarian goodwill include the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO), the Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center, American Cancer Society, Bell Shoals Children Services' summer camp, Ronald McDonald House, Hands of Hope, Brandon Outreach Clinic and Rotary's Camp Florida. Food is donated and tables are sponsored, which prompted Rotarian Lori Bukaweski to thank the Feb. 19 gathering and supporters for their donations, "so we can do all the wonderful things we do again this year." Rotary's Award-Winning Mad Hatter's Tea Party Hat a Family Affair

The Grafs made it look easy with this year's top-hat win at the Fifth Annual Mad Hatter's Tea Party at Cross Creek Ranch in Dover. The event is an annual fundraiser of the Rotary Club of Brandon South.

  Cassandra Graf is not at a loss for arts and crafts. Her house is full of them. For that, thank her mom, Denise, whose latest piece of work was set to be on display at the Osprey Observer newsroom on Lithia Pinecrest Road in Brandon. There, a special place is being set aside for Graf's winning hat at the Fifth Annual Mad Hatter's Tea Party at the Cross Creek Ranch bed and breakfast and event facility in Dover. The annual event is a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Brandon South and each year it features a "parade of hats" showcasing the talents of craftsmen and artists representing each table's sponsor. Brandon South Rotary's 1st Annual Lobstah' Fest at Winthrop (PHOTOS)

The Rotary Club of Brandon South, at the Winthrop Pole Barn in Riverview, presented its First Annual Lobstah' Festival. It's a continuation of a fundraiser launched by Rob Silver in his 2010 bid for honorary mayor of Brandon.

Kathy Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Brandon South, said she was pleased with the group's First Annual Lobstah' Festival, held Sept. 17 at the Winthrop Pole Barn in Riverview. "For a first-time event, it was a success," she said. "We couldn't suppport all the nonprofits we support throughout the year, like ECHO, A Kid's Place, Center Place and the Brandon Outreach Clinich, without events like this." Rotary Club of South Brandon Selling Tickets for ‘Lobstah' Fest’ Fundraiser

Rotarians will present the 2011 "Lobstah’ Fest” fundraiser at the Winthrop Pole Barn in Riverview on Sept. 17. Tickets are on sale at the Lake Brandon Village Chickf-fil-A, the Osprey Observer in Brandon and Jaymer Que BBQ in Valrico.

Have a hankering for fresh seafood? Then the Rotary Club of South Brandon has an event for you. The club will host its first Lobstah' Fest this Saturday, Sept. 17, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Winthrop Pole Barn, 11349 Bloomingdale Ave., Riverview. "This is the first time we're doing this fundraiser," said club president, Kathy Collins. "Our Mad Hatter's Tea Party in the spring [at Cross Creek Ranch in Dover] was such a success that we decided to try an additional event so we can raise even more for the nonprofits in the community. We hope to make this an annual event." Member Rob Silver came up with the idea of hosting the Lobstah' Fest.
