Mango Student Thanks Sheriff’s Corporal for Security Support at School

A heightened security presence at local schools in the wake of the Newtown massacre caused a Mango student to hand-deliver a note of thanks after a chance meeting with a corporal from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

  Law enforcement officers were on duty at local schools this week to show a united force of support in the wake of the Dec. 14 Newtown school shootings in Connecticut. That's what turned a chance meeting between Hillsborough County Sheriff's Cpl. Lance Connors and a Mango Elementary School student into a touching moment to remember. It happened Dec. 20, at around 7 a.m., when Connors, in uniform, reportedly was on patrol for a fourth day at the school's student drop-off area, in the Greater Brandon area of Seffner. The young girl, named Karmen, reportedly walked by him as he said, "Good morning." Elementary School Security: Should It Be Increased?

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., tragedy, some local law enforcement agencies are beefing up patrols at elementary schools. We want to hear from you Tampa Bay on whether this is a good idea or not?

On a crisp December Friday, a lone gunman walked onto an elementary school campus in Newtown, Conn., and began a rampage that would ultimately end the lives of 20 children, all between the ages of 6 and 7, and seven adults – himself included. As the grim news unfolded, people across America sat glued to the latest media reports on the internet and television. Most asked why this happened. Some desperately sought answers to the question of how such a shooting could occur in the first place. School employees received a telephone message from Hillsborough County Superintendent of Schools MaryEllen Elia concerning safety measures in place following the Newtown, Conn., massacre. Parents were sent a similar message.

  Hillsborough County's superintendent of schools, MaryEllen Elia, sent a telephone message to school-based employees aimed to alleviate fears or concerns they might have concerning school safety in light of the school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, Dec. 14.
