Get a Taste of Brandon at Florida State Fairgrounds Today (May 16)

Celebrating its 25th year, the Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon returns to the Florida State Fairgrounds today, May 16. The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce takes a retrospective approach to promoting the 2013 offering.

The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce has been busy promoting its signature event, which this year celebrates its 25th year. The Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon is scheduled for today, May 16, at the Florida State Fairgrounds, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Recognizing the quarter-century milestone, chamber officials have beeen posting blogs on its Web site , including one that takes a look back at the "big hair" and "shoulder pads" that were all the rage when the event in 1989 "welcomed its very first guests through the doors of the Sheraton Tampa East Hotel.   Today, May 11, is a great day to feature when you extol the virtues of living in a town focused on social responsibility, charitable concerns and community connections. ______________ Start the day by placing at your mailbox non-perishable food items for the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, run nationally by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Taco Bus Sets Grand Opening Date

Taco Bus is set to open on Falkenburg Road in the Greater Brandon area of Tampa.

UPDATE, May 9: Taco Bus has delayed the opening of the Brandon location. Earlier: The sign outside the building and repurposed yellow school bus on Falkenburg Road notes that "Taco Bus Brandon" is "Opening Spring 2013." The date for that grand opening has been set. A grand opening party is set for May 28, according to a report written in the Tampa Bay edition of The Current. According Taco Bus online, the restaurant features "traditional recipes from every region of the country, each prepared daily with fresh ingredients in a custom kitchen." Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the menu features as well a variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free selections. Chef Rene Valenzuela is noted as the owner of both Taco Bus and Taqueria …

New Restaurant Opening, Guess Where in Brandon

Another restaurant is set to open in Brandon.

  Duly noted is the expected May opening of a restaurant in Brandon featuring Mexican food. At a shopping center in Brandon, near the corner of two major roadways, this Mexican restaurant will feature "authentic taqueria steak, chicken, fish or shrimp, tacos, sopes," according to a window sign. The street number is 865 and dancers develop their skills nearby. ______________ Guess where in Brandon, you soon will be abe to eat at another Mexican restaurant. Zapps, What Is It?

A new sign is up in Brandon, announcing the arrival of another business.

  Zapps, what is it? It's a new business in Brandon, featuring "food, spirits, fun" and "entertainment," according to a sign posted out front. Zapps is "coming soon" and will fill the space vacated by the Boomerang Martini Bar, adjacent to the closed Borders, near the entranceways to both the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway and the Westfield Brandon shopping mall. Zapps is set to open at 2016 Town Center Blvd.

Who's Offering 70 Percent Discounts at the Mall?

Westfield Brandon store is closing, prompting "final days" announcement of steep discounts.

  Looking for an affordable piece of jewerly? Now might be a time to visit the Westfield Brandon shopping center, where "final days" sale signs announcing 70 percent discounts are plastered throughout Venetian Jewelers. The store is closing, according to a set of black-and-gold signs, clearly visible to 2013 Westfield Brandon shoppers on Thursday, April 25. The store is caddy corner to the carousel, in the hallway leading to the food court. According to a three-year-old Tampa Bay Times report, Venetian Jewelers opened in Brandon in May 2010, featuring "some affordable diamond jewelry, with prices as low as about $30,but also "items that run as high as $12,000."

  The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce welcomes and celebrates businesse ventures with ribbon-cuttings  scheduled through June 17. Also, the 2013 Leadership Brandon graduation class is set to celebrate at The Regent in Riverview on May 7 while preparations and sign-ups contine for the chamber's signature event, the Brandon Business Expo and Taste of Brandon, scheduled for May 16. Cancer Fighter's Legacy Lives On in A New You Pink Boutique

Lisa Minnifield's sisters vow to keep open A New You Pink Boutique in Brandon, founded by Minnifeld to minister to women, young and old, in their battles against breast cancer. She died April 8.

  At A New You Pink Boutique in Brandon, the drive to succeed remains as strong as ever despite the April 8 death of its co-founder, Lisa Minnifield. And that's how it should be, said Darlene Gaylord, a banker at the next-door Centre State Bank, where a fund in Minnifield's name has been started, in lieu of funeral flowers. "She was a ball of energy," Gaylord said about Minnifield the business woman, and Minnifield the missionary. "Heaven had to be busy with it when she came through the doors." Minnifield's sister, Carol Poole, said at the boutique April 15 that Minnifield had one overriding passion: "She loved people," said Poole, who co-founded the boutique with her sister. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Ms. Minnifields. I met her while she was a patient where I work. I remember how she would sit in front of me and just chit chat about anything. She showed strength and compassion toward others. Even though she was going through this awful disease she always had a smile. Now she is with our lord and with no pain. Psyched for Taco Bus in Brandon?

Taco Bus is readying for a spring opening in the Greater Brandon area of Tampa, on Falkenburg Road.

  A repurposed yellow school bus was visible on Falkenburg Road last night, April 7, at what soon will become a bricks-and-mortar Taco Bus eatery in the Greater Brandon area of Tampa. A sign outside the building under construction notes that "Taco Bus Brandon" is "Opening Spring 2013." Calling it "perhaps Tampa's most famous restaurant," the Tampa Bay Times, in a Dec. 13 report, notes that the Mexican restaurant has "become a Tampa institution in just 10 years" and "has been featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on Food Network and Adam Richman's Man Vs. Brandon Kiwanians Ready for Charity Poker Run

The April 6 "Kickstands for Kids" fundraiser at Uncle Mike's Smokehouse Grill aims to benefit Kiwanis youth programs in local schools and the Joshua House. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon event is not just for motorcycle riders.

  The Kiwanis Club of Greater Brandon is gearing up for the April 6 "Kickstands for Kids" fundraiser for Kiwanis youth programs in local schools and the Joshua House, a safe haven for absused, neglected and abandoned children in the Tampa Bay area. The local club's inaugural poker run kicks off with registration at 10 a.m. at Uncle Mike's Smokehouse Grill in Brandon, at 9847 East Adamo Drive, indside the Old Town Brandon Harley Davidson on State Road 60.
