With Memorial Day weekend and its rising gas prices on the horizon, we're in luck: There are plenty of celebrated beaches within a one-tank trip of the Tampa Bay area. Which local beach is your favorite? Maybe it's Siesta Key, named best beach in the U.S. in 2011. Farther north, Fort De Soto beach and Caladesi Island took top honors in 2005 and 2008. Midway into February and it’s time to look ahead to what’s happening and worthy of note in the Greater Brandon community. The weekend gets under way with an indoor percussion tournament at Newsome High School and a memorial bonfire for Brooke Ann Coats, who a year ago tonight, Feb. 18, died after a bull-riding accident at the Crosstown Rodeo Arena. Keep in mind, too, that the Brandon wrestlers are in Lakeland to compete for a 23rd state title. As of this morning, nine Brandon wrestlers had advanced to the second, and final, day of competition. As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Nam Knights are bringing metal from the World Trade Center to Brandon. Members of the Knights, a group of former and active military and law enforcement personnel, escorted the beam from New York City earlier in the week. The beam will be on display from 2-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at O’Brien’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, 701 West Lumsden Rd. The restaurant is also hosting a fundraiser for Justin Hancock from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. The 30-year-old Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy is undergoing treatment for bone cancer. The play’s the thing this weekend in Brandon with two local theater companies staging productions. The Frenzie Life Theatre premieres their production of “The Children’s Hour” at The Winthrop Barn Theatre, 11349 West Bloomingdale Ave, Riverview Saturday. Standing out like two hotels on Park Avenue, the Seffner-Mango Branch Library is hosting a game of life-size monopoly this week where you become the game piece. The object of the game is to buy as many teen books as possible without landing yourself in “Library Jail.” A literary version of Orwell’s Room 101, for me that would be a room filled with Tom Clancy and romance “books.” Sounds like a fun trip.
