Curtain Closes, Santa Claus Visits at the James McCabe Theater

After the opening night's final curtain of the Village Players 2012 production of "Miracle on 34th Street," Santa Claus, also known as Kris Kringle, stuck around for photo shoots with audience members, young and old.

It was show time for the 2012 production of the Village Players production of "Miracle on 34th Street," featuring Kris Kringle, as Santa Claus, and a courtroom full of people who have to believe. Following the opening night curtain Nov. 30, audience members, young and old, lined up for photographs with Santa Claus, who bore a striking resemblance to community theater veteran Donald "D.G." Speirs. For Speirs, playing Santa Claus is more than a role, more than a job, more than a way to spend the holidays. To say it's a dream to play his dream role sounds trite, but it's true. To say that he believes? Well, that's true, too. "Miracle on 34th Street" centers on divorcee Doris Walker and her young daughter, Susan (played by Hannah Westcott), …

Playing Santa Claus, a Role of a Lifetime

Donald "D.G." Speirs bears a striking resemblance to Santa Claus. His role as Kris Kringle in the Village Players production of "Miracle on 34th Street" gives him yet another reason to talk about why he has donned the iconic red suit and hat for years.

For Donald "D.G." Speirs, playing Santa Claus is more than a role, more than a job, more than a way to spend the holidays. To say it's a dream to play his dream role sounds trite, but it's true. To say that he believes? Well, that's true, too. And, "it's a lot of fun," he added, offstage at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico, where his portrayal of Santa Claus will take center stage in the days ahead, in the community theater troupe's presentation of Miracle on 34th Street. "The show is a dream come true for me," said Speirs, who first had the role of Kris Kringle in 2006 and has been donning the costume of Santa Claus ever since, both for a passion and for a profession, including, he said, a stint for the Seattle Seahawks, at their …

Rehearsals are under way at the James McCabe Theater in Valrico for the Village Players' holiday production of Miracle on 34th Street. The show is under the direction of Gail Pierce, who called the show, "probably one of the most endearing shows out there." "This is mine, this is my show," Pierce said about her attraction to the Christmas classic, which features Kris Kringle, a white-bearded, older man from a retirement home who gets a job working as Santa at Macy's in New York City. "The show is about believing, that anything is possible as long as you believe," Pierce said. "That against all odds, a simple truth prevails." The show's assistant director is Josie Costa. The show is not a musical, but it has a musical director, Lisa …
