Durant Football: Cougars Remain Undefeated With Chamberlain Win

The undefeated Durant High School Cougars beat the Chamberlain Chiefs on Oct. 12 to make it a 6-0 season. The homecoming game was played on Durant's home turf in Plant City.

  The Durant Cougars remain undefeated with Friday night's shut-out win at home against the Chamberlain Chiefs. On the night Morgan Heartsfield was crowned homecoming queen, the Cougars dominated play on the field with a 49-0 victory fueled in large part by Jamarlon Hamilton's four touchdown runs. It was the third shut-out win of the season for the Cougars (see chart below). After tonight's game, the Cougars in 2012 have amassed 206 points in six outings, averaging out to 34 points per game.  The win makes the Cougars 6-0 for the season and 2-0 in league play. The Chiefs left the field with a 2-4 record, including one league win and one league loss. Next up for the Chiefs, under head coach D.J. Mayo, is a home game against  Wiregrass Ranch…

Durant Crowns a Queen, Homecoming Draws a Crowd

The 2012 Homecoming Queen was crowned on the football field at Durant High School on Oct. 12 before a large crowd there to see the Durant Cougars continue their domination with a sixth win in the team's undefeated season.

At the game, fans, players and cheerleaders sported the color pink to signify their support of October Breast Cancer Awareness Month. "It feels great," said Sydney Robinson, about her school's domination on the football field this year. "I'm really looking forward to them going to the playoffs. This is my last year so I'm looking forward to going as far as we can in football and competitive cheerleading." Durant Football: Undefeated Cougars Face Chamberlain at Home (Oct. 12)

The undefeated Durant High School Cougars look to add a sixth game to their winning streak with their Oct. 12 contest against the Chamberlain Chiefs. The homecoming game will be played on Durant's home turf in Plant City.

  The undefeated Durant Cougars, following last week's win against their crosstown rivals — the Patriots of Plant City High — celebrate homecoming tonight, Oct. 12, with a game against the Chamberlain Chiefs. (Meanwhile, the Brandon Eagles travel to Plant while the Armwood Hawks face the Chargers at Strawberry Crest.) Durant faces the Chiefs (1-1 in league play, 2-3 overall), ranked nationally and in the state at 4,190 and 245, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com. Durant's Undefeated Season Kept Alive With 1-Point Win Over Wharton

The Durant High School Cougars played the Wharton Wildcats in New Tampa on Sept. 28. A fourth-quarter touchdown kept alive the Plant City team's push for an undefeated varsity football season.

  The Durant Cougars, following last week's shutout win against Brandon (36-0), added their fourth win to an undefeated season with a fourth-quarter touchdown on the home turf of the Wharton Wildcats on Sept. 28. Durant Extends Win Streak to 3, Beats Brandon 36-0 at McLane Stadium

The Durant Cougars are on a roll, with three wins and no losses. It's a different story for the Brandon Eagles, who lost their third game of the season, hosting the Plant City team at home Sept. 21.

  Durant defense held the Brandon Eagles at bay as the Cougars of Plant City extended their winning streak to three games and no losses. The Eagles were shut out Sept. 21 at home (36-0), extending their losing streak to three games. It was the first conference game for both teams. Following a rain-delay start, the Eagles took to the field after an overtime loss the week before to the Freedom Patriots (20-14). The Cougars, who had a bye Sept. 14, shut out Alonso the week before that (29-0). Durant faced Freedom in the first regular game of the season, Sept. 1, trouncing the Patriots (57-7). Eagles Football Tonight, Brandon at Home Against Durant

Game time Sept. 21 is 7:30 p.m. for the Brandon Eagles on their home turf. They host the Durant High School Cougars at McLane Stadium.

  The Brandon High Eagles, coming off an overtime loss at home to the Freedom Patriots, take to the home field tonight to face the the Durant Cougars. Game time at McLane Stadium is 7:30 p.m. (Meanwhile, the Armwood Hawks are set to travel to Leto.) Brandon faces the Cougars (2-0 overall, 0-0 in league play), ranked nationally and in the state at 1,155 and 90, respectively, according to MaxPreps.com. Olympian Brooke Bennett Receives Hillsborough Sheriff's Citizen's Award

Three-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Brooke Bennett paid tribute to Brandon and the Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center after receiving a Citizen's Award from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office on Sept. 12.

  Brooke Bennett, a three-time Olympic gold medalist in distance swimming, who trained early in her life at the Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center, received on Sept. 12 from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office an award for community involvement. "Oh, it's wonderful," said Bennett, in an interview after the Awards Recognition Ceremony for the third quarter of 2012. Thankful for her receipt of the Citizen's Award, Bennett said what matters most is that "my accomplishments enable me to do something for others in the community." The recognition gathering is held quarterly at the jail assembly room in the Greater Brandon area of Tampa, at 520 North Falkenburg Road. Brandon '86 Rotarians Award High School Scholarships

Graduating seniors from Arwmood and Durant high school receive this year's Lambert P. Friederich and Marion Link memorial scholarships.

  The following report was submitted by Rotarians Bob Davis and Jeff Miltner, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Brandon '86. ______________ Each year the Brandon '86 Rotary Club awards two, $1,000 scholarships to winners who best represent the Rotary motto, "Service Above Self." This year's winners hail from Armwood and Durant high schools. The scholarships are named after Brandon '86 Rotarians who have passed away and were monumental to the club's development. Awarded is the Lambert P. Friederich Memorial Scholarship and the Marion Link Century of Service Scholarship. Alexandria Sweat, who ranked fifth in her class at Durant High School, was awarded the Lambert P. Friederich Memorial Scholaship. She possesses qualities that will influence …

Greater Brandon's Jeremy Rosado Vying for American Idol Crown

Durant graduate Jeremy Rosado, a student at Hillsborough Community College, is vying for the next American Idol crown. Friends and family at the Brandon Ale House are set to watch the Feb. 22 show at 8 p.m.

Durant High School graduate Jeremy Rosado was just 6 years old when he first took the stage.  “I can’t believe I’m sharing this,” said Rosado, 19.  “I loved Britney Spears. And it was bad. I was a little boy, probably 6, 7 years old, trying to sing and dance like her.” These days, the Valrico resident has his own style, which he exhibited to effect at the Savannah, Ga., Season 11 auditions of “American Idol” when he sang Luther Van Dross’s “Superstar.” Judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson were duly impressed with Rosado’s performance, sending him on to competition in Hollywood. “When they gave me that golden ticket, I was kind of thinking they were talking to the girl that was waiting on deck to go after me, and maybe they…

Cougar Wrestlers Make Medal Stand at States

Durant High's Darrien Kelly took fourth place and teammate Chase Haley finished sixth at the state wrestling finals Saturday in Lakeland.

LAKELAND — Durant High placed two wrestlers on the medal stand Saturday at the state finals at The Lakeland Center. Junior Darrien Kelly (38-12) lost his opening match of the finals but rallied to finish 4-2 and claim the fourth-place medal at 120 pounds in Class 3A. Senior Chase Haley (41-9) won his first two matches before tumbling to the consolation bracket. He would drop the fifth-place match to Bryan Betancourt of South Broward (39-4) yet still keep his place (sixth) on the stand. Bloomingdale-Riverview Patch caught up with Kelly after his match.
