Sheriff's Patrols On The Lookout For Most-Wanted School Supplies

Eighteen of the most-wanted school supplies are being collected through Aug. 2. Hillsborough public school reopen Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Admit it, you can still smell the scent of a newly opened box of crayons. That new notebook with the cool design? Crisp sheets of notebook paper? A cool backpack in which to carry it all to school?

And what if you didn't have anything new, or anything at all, when you went back to school for the first day, or weeks, of classes? Think you wouldn't notice? Think others wouldn't notice as well?

Forget that.

No child should be in that position, which is why the sheriff's office is one of many groups in the area working now to ensure that no child gets left behind with no school supplies for the first day of school.

"Sheriff David Gee and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office are seeking school supplies for children in need," reads a "Sheriff's Most Wanted" announcement posted on the office's Web site. "Be on the lookout for these supplies when you patrol the community."

The list is for the following items:

  • Crayons, eight-pack, large
  • Glue — bottle, stick
  • Blunt scissors
  • Pencil box
  • Ziploc bags, any size
  • Handwipes
  • Two-pocket notebooks
  • Highlighters
  • Composition notebooks
  • Spiral-bound notebooks
  • Erasers
  • No. 2 pencils
  • One-subject notebooks
  • Backbacks
  • Protractor
  • Wide-ruled notebook paper
  • Tissues
  • Paper towels
Supplies are being collected through Aug. 2. For information, call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office's Outreach Division at 813-247-8115.
